2010 and 2011 Chevy Camaro Makes Muscle Car Comeback

In September of 1966, with a listed base-price of $2,466, the 1967 Camaro was born, as was its sister on the "F-Body" platform, the Pontiac Firebird. Although the standards of the time dictated it was a compact car, it was also classified as an intermediate touring car and a sports car. The Camaro's primary design mission though, regardless of how you label it, was to be the yin to Ford Mustang's yang - two muscle cars flexing in the same pony car division.

After four generations of the Camaro helping to define the look and sound of the ensuing decades, production abruptly ended in 2002. Then, in March of 2009, the nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth generation Camaro. And now, with the dawning of 2011, the Camaro has returned with its full Transformers Bumblebee induced glory.

The SS model for example is powered by the LS3 6.2-liter V8 engine and it has a six-speed manual transmission which produces a factory claimed 426 horsepower. The automatic transmission equipped Camaro SS is fitted with the L99 V8 engine producing 400 horsepower. To counter the engine's get-go Chevrolet opted to outfit the SS with four-piston Brembo brakes, along with the StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System with Traction Control. Unquestionably, this is a car designed with the sports car aficionado in mind.

The V6 model features a direct-injected, DOHC engine that pushes an impressive 304 ponies and also comes with a choice of 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. How far has the fifth generation technology come? The new V6 Camaro can clearly out-gun many older V8 models, both at the drag strip and at your local road course. As depicted in the two hit movies, these Camaros are monsters - good monsters as it were though.

With that much power coming straight from the factory, the challenge to create an air intake that would beat the competition and OEM specs wasn't easy, yet AEM's engineering department managed to get it done. After months of testing a total of nine different designs with 24 variables, using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, in-vehicle fuel-trim tests, under hood thermal analysis, and over 180 dyno pulls on six different vehicles - they finally designed a winner with impressive mid-to-high range power increase.

There are in fact three new AEM Cold Air Intake Systems available for the 2010 and 2011 Camaro. For the V6 model there is the gunmetal gray finish intake (21-8028DC) and another available with a polished finish (21-8028DP).  Specially engineered for the SS 6.2 liter V8 model there is also a gunmetal gray finish intake (21-8029C).

All three AEM Cold Air Intake Systems for the Camaro use an oil-free DryFlow air filter technology which is extremely durable and easy to clean. To further augment the filtration properties of the DryFlow performance air filter, AEM also offers DryFlow Pre-Filters, designed to prevent splashes of water and/or mud from saturating the DryFlow air filter. AEM's Pre-Filters are manufactured from durable micro-screen materials that are pretreated with a proprietary hydrophobic process.

The more important development though is that all three intake systems provide around 16 horsepower of added peak power. In testing the factory form Camaro V8 generated a peak of 318.67 horsepower at the rear wheels. With the AEM cold intake system in place the peak power output jumped up to 325.98 horsepower - a maximum gain of 16.53 horsepower at 4,200 RPM.

Testing of AEM intakes for the V6 engine revealed a maximum power gain of 16.39 horsepower at 5350 RPM and 17.57 ft-lbs of torque at 2600RPM at the rear wheels. Any way you slice it that's a lot of pop for a relatively simple bolt-on installation.

Generations of car enthusiasts, hot-rodders and motor-heads began jonesing almost immediately when Chevrolet announced it was discontinuing Camaro production. Rejoice and jones no more, the Camaro is back, and it's badder than ever. Add an AEM Cold Air Intake System and this fifth generation Camaro will deliver an irrepressible tear of joy.

Unleash the Performance Potential of 2010-2012 Hyundai Genesis with AEM's Intercooler Kit

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe offers enthusiasts many options. Enthusiasts can choose from seven different trim levels involving brake options, transmission choices, and wheel/tire selections. One of the main decisions however is the option of either the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or the 3.8-liter V6 powerplant. If forced-induction performance is what enthusiasts are after then the four-cylinder variety is the way to go. When AEM's performance engineers began research and development on the Genesis 2.0-liter engine, it was clear that there was plenty of performance yet to be unleashed.

The first phase of the tuning process for AEM was to develop a high-performance Cold Air Intake System. The prompt release of the 21-687C Cold Air Intake System with gunmetal gray finish and the 21-687P Cold Air Intake System with a polished aluminum finish fulfilled the initial step. These air intakes deliver an efficient design that produces a gain of seven horsepower at 6,500 RPM on the 2.0-liter engine. Moving forward, AEM designed a complementing aftermarket component to go with either of these cold air intakes. AEM is proud to introduce an all-new high-flow front mount Intercooler Kit (part Number 26-2100C) for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

In designing the Front Mount Intercooler Kit for the Genesis, AEM strived to create an aftermarket performance component with OEM fitment and finish. In doing so, OEM routing paths were selected for the ducting of the intercooler system. Additionally, when possible OEM clearances were maintained to critical systems found in the engine compartment of the Coupe. The finished product is a complete front mount Intercooler Kit that is designed specifically to work with AEM Cold Air Intake System (Part Numbers 21-687C and 21-687P). The front mount Intercooler Kit part 26-2100C has a Gunmetal Gray finish.

The 26-2100C intercooler kit is a comprehensive bolt-on air cooling system, it contains everything that is necessary for installation down to the couplers, clamps, and brackets. At the heart of the system, a large bar-and-plate intercooler core was chosen to replace the factory Hyundai intercooler. The AEM intercooler core is capped on both ends with end tanks that are optimized to evenly distribute airflow across the core. All-new charge pipes are also included, which are constructed from high-quality 6063-grade mandrel-bent aluminum. On the right side of the vehicle, the charge pipe connects the turbo discharge to the intercooler. On the left side, the connection from the intercooler to the throttle body is made. As an added benefit, a mounting pad is incorporated onto the charge pipe just before the throttle body. This mounting pad can be utilized to easily plumb water/methanol injection systems into the air inlet tract. This is especially useful for high boost pressure applications and vehicles used in hot climates.

Testing of the AEM Front Mount Intercooler Kit for the Genesis Coupe has revealed valuable performance data. By replacing the Genesis' factory intercooler with the AEM Front Mount Intercooler Kit, the volume of the intercooler core is doubled. This massive increase in volume results into greatly improved heat transfer, which in turn significantly reduces inlet air temperatures.

2010 was another awesome season for the Rockstar Energy Scion drift team sponsored by AEM Induction Systems. Their V8 powered drifting machine propelled driver Tanner Foust, team owner Stephan Papadakis, and the rest of the team to an impressive 2nd place finish at the end of the season and their third top three finish in four years.

The competition has only gotten more intense as the years have passed, and Stephan, Tanner, and their team continue to throw their cars sideways at the head of the pack. AEM recently had an opportunity to sit down with team owner Stephan Papadakis and ask him about the team's 2010 season and what changes they're looking to make for the 2011 season to help their team stay competitive.

What were some of the major challenges your team faced for the 2010 season?
The major challenge we faced in 2010 was the increased competition from all the teams. Everyone really stepped it up with their vehicle prep, speed and performance around the tracks, so we had to fight to stay ahead.

Tanner did a great job driving and our team was awesome in making sure the Scion held up on the track.

How do you feel about your team's performance over the 2010 season?
Excellent. With two wins and several podiums, any other year we would've won the championship.

JR just had a better season, obviously a better season than we had. The competition has just stepped up so much. However with winning the last event in Irwindale we have a lot of momentum going into the 2011 season.

What was the highlight of the season for you?
The highlight of the season was definitely winning the last event in Irwindale, beating the season champion, and moving all the way up to 2nd in points.

What was the lowpoint of the season?
The lowest point of the season was probably Atlanta, knowing that we had the car and Tanner could've won the event, but losing in the top 16 and just going out early.

What are some of the most important lessons you've learned from the 2010 season?
One of the biggest lessons we learned was when to drive aggressively in the rounds and when to drive more conservatively. I spot for Tanner so we discuss when to push it and when to back off. You have to be careful not to get into the rear end of the other guy when you're following. That happened in Atlanta and again in Vegas where Tanner was going 100% and we ended up losing because the guy he was following wasn't charging as hard and Tanner hit their bumper. We've taken that as a big lesson from 2010.

Are there any changes you're planning to make for the 2011 season that you can share?
We're changing the entire vehicle. The 2009 Scion we have is going to be retired. It's going to be a demo vehicle, and we're building one of the brand new 2011 Scion TC's.

While being an awesome season with a strong 2nd place finish, 2010 was also a great learning experience for the Rockstar Energy Scion team and they listened. They're learning from their successes and mistakes and making some exciting changes for the 2011 season. Will an all-new platform be the trick to get Stephan, Tanner, and the team back on top of the podium? What will the competition be like in 2011 knowing the level of intensity in 2010?
