The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show is a trade-only event bringing the automotive aftermarket industry’s biggest companies, brightest minds, and hottest products to one place, the Las Vegas Convention Center. The AEM Induction Systems 2014 SEMA show booth could be found in the heart of the convention center’s central hall, also referred to as the performance hall during the SEMA show, between the Ford and GM show booths.

AEM’s solid location at the SEMA show afforded the opportunity to highlight brand new AEM performance products, and some exciting custom vehicles equipped with AEM cold air intake systems. In addition to new AEM performance products highlighted in the AEM 2014 SEMA show booth, there is a new products showcase located on the upper level of the south hall. Here AEM gave the automotive aftermarket industry its first glimpse of several new AEM products including part number 29-0011WR, a brand new performance strut bar for 2015 Subaru WRX and WRX STi models, as well as the accompanying cold air intake system 21-735WR.

Mike Kim really likes his AEM cold air intake system
Mike Kim really likes his AEM cold air intake system because; as he said “It’s the only cold air intake on the market (for the Wrangler JK) that works with most snorkel systems.”
If a pickup truck is more your style, AEM debuted the evolution in AEM air intake systems designed to increase performance while still complying with California emissions standards. Two such examples are part numbers 22-682C, for 2003-2009 Toyota 4 Runner 4.0L models, as well as the newest edition to this line of intakes, number 22-681C, for 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L models. These two new air intake systems are 50-state street legal and will provide an increase in horsepower and torque that you can feel.

The Factory Five 818R kit car powered by a 2002-2007 era Subaru WRX platform and built by Keith Pizio at Six Star Cars will be his full-time race car for the 2015 SCCA & NASA season
Of course, a SEMA show booth is incomplete without a tricked out show vehicle or two. This year the AEM Intakes 2014 SEMA show booth featured two custom vehicles at the opposite ends of the spectrum. AEM Intakes was rockin’ a Jeep Wrangler JK situated at the right side of the AEM SEMA show booth. Built by Mike Kim of Off-Road Power Products, the Wrangler JK was propped up on stands to show the amazing articulation this vehicle is capable of when equipped with the proprietary Off-Road Power Products (OPP) suspension package. According to Kim, “The stands are 40” tall, but this Jeep is capable of 42” of articulation while remaining stable.” As good as Mike Kim’s Wrangler JK looks, this Jeep is no trailer queen. This fact is obvious as a closer look reveals the trail-rash under the Jeep, and on the true bead lock wheels. “OPP is different from a lot of companies because we actually use our marketing vehicles. We’re not afraid to get scratches and dings on the trail. It gives them character,” stated Kim. The OPP Wrangler JK is equipped with AEM cold air intake 21-8316DS, which features a sealed air box design to keep out heat as well as mud, and water when off-roading. Mike Kim really likes this AEM cold air intake because; as he said “It’s the only cold air intake on the market (for the Wrangler JK) that works with most snorkel systems.”

In stark contrast to the Wrangler JK; a dedicated road racer was rollin’ out front of the AEM 2014 SEMA show booth. The Factory Five 818R kit car built by Keith Pizio at Six Star Cars will be his full-time race car for the 2015 season. The 818R race car is powered by a 2002-2007 era Subaru WRX platform. The 818R chassis switches up the whole Subaru WRX drivetrain by converting it from front engine AWD, to a mid-engine rear wheel drive platform. According to Keith Pizio “Converting the WRX powertrain to rear drive only has shown a dyno proven 45 horsepower increase.” Keith spent exactly 58 days building his 818R, completing it just in time for the 2014 SEMA show. “60 days ago, there was nothing, not even a chassis” said Pizio. One thing that wasn’t difficult for Keith, was finding an AEM cold air intake for his 818R. “I took an off the shelf 2006-2007 Subaru WRX AEM cold air intake (21-477C), shortened the tube a little, fabricated a bracket, and it looked as if this kit was made for the 818R,” said Pizio.

Overall the 2014 SEMA show was a success for AEM Induction Systems. The ability to interact with the automotive aftermarket industry’s biggest companies, brightest minds, and hottest products is sure to inspire new ideas and innovation going into 2015. Hunter S. Thompson, author of the 1972 novel Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, once said “A little bit of this town goes a very long way.” Four days of one of the largest trade shows in Las Vegas proves that this quote hit the nail on the head. But even though the SEMA show is a grind, AEM will be back at the Las Vegas Convention Center in 2015; because as the king of rock and roll Elvis Presley once said “Man, I really like Vegas.”

2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX and WRX STi Get an AEM Performance Strut Bar

AEM Performance Strut Bar for the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L and WRX STi 2.5L
The AEM Performance Strut Bar for the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L and WRX STi 2.5L is finished in long-lasting wrinkle red powdercoat to ensure it maintains an attractive appearance

Most car or truck enthusiasts picture a cold air intake system when they hear the name AEM. AEM Induction Systems has made great headway and built its reputation on cold air induction systems, but since 1987 Advanced Engine Management (AEM) has been in the business of improving performance. More power is only one aspect of the driving equation. Being able to properly control horsepower in the all-wheel drive, turbocharged, and intercooled 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L or WRX STi 2.5L is crucial to solving the performance equation.

AEM Performance Strut Bar for Subaru WRX and WRX STi
AEM Performance Strut Bar, 29-0011WR, is designed to step up the driving experience, yet fit as if it came installed on the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L and WRX STi 2.5L from the factory in Japan

When a car equipped with a McPherson Strut suspension system, like the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L or WRX STi 2.5L, is being driven through a turn there is inherent flex in the strut towers and chassis. It’s not uncommon to experience as much as 1/8” of shift in the strut towers during hard cornering. This flex can result in unpredictable handling of the car. An effectively designed performance strut bar will transfer the load incurred by shifting weight between the two strut towers and reduce the effects of chassis flex.

2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX STi with AEM Strut Bar
This 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX STi, shown in WR Blue Pearl paint, is powered by the EJ257 intercooled and turbocharged H4 engine is equipped with an AEM cold air intake as well as an AEM performance strut bar

Unfortunately, many of the aftermarket strut tower bars available have a hinged design and therefore offer little support to the strut towers. An effective performance strut bar, like those from AEM, must be rigid throughout its length. Additionally, many of the strut tower bars on the market could interfere with performance upgrades such as a cold air intake system. This is where AEM Induction Systems factors the performance strut bar for the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L and WRX STi 2.5L into the equation.

An AEM performance strut bar is an excellent bolt on solution to the issue of strut tower flex in the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L and 2015 and 2016 WRX STi 2.5L. An AEM performance strut bar is constructed using thin wall mild steel tubing for a good strength to weight ratio. They are built with a rigid design to effectively tie the two strut towers together. Best of all AEM designed the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L and 2015 and 2016 WRX STi 2.5L performance strut bar with an AEM cold air intake system in mind. An AEM performance strut tower bar will not interfere with the AEM cold air intake system 21-735WR, for the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX STi 2.5L or the AEM CAI for a 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L.

The AEM performance strut bar for 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L and 2015 and 2016 WRX STi 2.5L models is designed as a bolt on suspension upgrade for the 2015 and 2016 WRX or 2015 and 2016 WRX STi and reuses OEM mounting hardware. The 29-0011WR performance strut bar will work with the factory intake system and is guaranteed to work with an AEM Cold Air Intake System. As with an AEM CAI, an AEM performance strut bar is designed to last for the life of your vehicle. Constructed in the U.S.A. with high quality mild steel, and protected with a wrinkle red durable powdercoat finish, AEM warrants that its performance strut bar will last for the life of your 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX or 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX STi.

AEM Performance Strut Bar 29-0011WR will boost the driving experience of the following Subaru WRX and WRX STi models:

2016 Subaru WRX STi 2.5L H4
2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L H4
2016 Subaru Impreza WRX STi 2.5L
2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX STi 2.5L
2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX 2.0L

Understanding an AEM Electronically Tuned Intake (ETI)

An AEM ETI module is like an electronic mediator, keeping both the MAF sensor and ECU happy allowing AEM to take full advantage of larger air intake tubes and improved performance
An AEM ETI module is like an electronic mediator, keeping both the MAF sensor and ECU happy allowing AEM to take full advantage of larger air intake tubes and improved performance

An air intake system is designed to increase power by reducing air intake restriction and turbulence. It’s pretty common to find that an aftermarket air intake system uses larger diameter air intake tubes than what comes from the factory. This is very effective at reducing restriction in the air path, but when a larger diameter intake is used on modern cars equipped with a mass airflow (MAF) sensor, it can create confusion for the engine control unit (ECU). This confusion will often lead to a check engine light and/or drivability issues.

When it comes to installation the AEM electronically tuned intake module is a simple plug and play solution using factory connections and does not require any cutting or splicing
When it comes to installation the AEM electronically tuned intake module is a simple plug and play solution using factory connections and does not require any cutting or splicing

Larger diameter tubing is capable of delivering a greater volume of air, but at the same time this can confuse a vehicle’s ECU due to improper MAF sensor readings. Without getting too technical, based on Bernoulli's principle, airspeed will decrease as the size of air intake tubes increase. Slower air speed will cause the mass airflow sensor to send inaccurate readings to the engine control unit. The ECU will then attempt to compensate by adjusting the amount of fuel injected into the cylinders.

Before the AEM electronically tuned intake, a properly designed short ram intake, or cold air intake, would use mechanical methods of increasing air speed, such as reducing the tube diameter, as it passes through the MAF sensor. While this is effective at preventing check engine lights, it has two negative side effects. First, this usually causes a point of restriction in the air intake tube, and second it creates turbulence in the airflow. Reducing restriction and turbulence are supposed to be the two goals of an aftermarket air intake system.

With an AEM Electronically Controlled Intake (ETI), there is no need to detune an air intake system. The ETI module included with every AEM ETI air intake is designed to communicate with the mass airflow sensor and the ECU. Think of an AEM ETI module as a mediator, keeping both the MAF sensor and ECU happy. This allows AEM to take full advantage of larger air intake tubes and improving performance without the hassle of aftermarket tuning or the risk of drivability issues.

Not every car or truck needs the aid of an AEM Electronically Tuned Intake module for enhanced performance. Use the Search by Car or Truck tool to find an AEM air intake system for your vehicle and see if an AEM ETI air intake is available.

Traditionally an air intake system would need to be detuned, often by reducing the air intake tubes diameter, to prevent a check engine light and/or drivability issues
