AEM Short Ram Air Intakes Offer Simple Performance Upgrades

An AEM short ram air intake eliminates the restrictive factory intake tubes

The goal of an aftermarket air intake system, whether it’s an AEM short ram air intake or an AEM cold air intake, is to increase power by reducing air intake restriction and turbulence. An aftermarket air intake system typically uses a larger diameter air intake tube than what comes from the factory. Larger diameter air intake tubing with smooth inner walls is capable of delivering a greater volume of air with less turbulence. When larger diameter tubing is matched with a performance air filter, such as an AEM Dryflow filter, the end result is an increase in power, improved performance, and better engine sound.

Certain engines designed for peak power near redline, like a Honda VTEC engine; will benefit more from the installation of an AEM short ram air intake

Most often, the greatest point of restriction in the factory intake system is the stock air filter box and the disposable automotive air filter. An AEM short ram air intake eliminates the restrictive factory intake tubes, and sound baffling with a mandrel bent aluminum air intake tube coupled to a free flowing AEM Dryflow synthetic air filter. The performance goal of an AEM short ram air intake system is to deliver as much unrestricted air as the engine can use quickly and with the fewest bends possible.

An AEM short ram air intake system will most often deliver a higher performance increase in the upper RPM range in comparison to an AEM cold air intake. This is a point worth considering if debating between purchasing an AEM short ram air intake and an AEM cold air intake system. Certain driving situations, such as track racing, or engines designed for peak power near redline will benefit more from the installation of an AEM short ram air intake. During testing AEM has found that certain vehicle models and engines only respond well toward an AEM short ram air intake rather than a cold air intake or vice versa. In these instances, AEM will only offer the most favorable style air intake system.

AEM short ram air intake systems use less tubing, fewer brackets, and require less time to develop
AEM short ram air intake systems use less tubing, fewer brackets, and require less time to develop than cold air intakes which equates to a lower purchase price for the end user

An additional benefit of an AEM short ram air intake versus a cold air intake is ease of installation. Installing an AEM short ram air intake is almost always easier than installing an AEM CAI. An AEM short ram air intake is normally a simple bolt-on upgrade that does not require cutting, drilling, or additional modifications to complete the installation. In conjunction with ease of installation, AEM short ram air intake systems use less aluminum tubing, fewer mounting brackets, and require less time to develop than cold air intakes. This usually results in a lower cost to manufacture and a lower purchase price for the end user. Saving money when purchasing an AEM short ram air intake, versus a complete cold air intake system, is an advantage not to be overlooked.

An AEM short ram air intake makes sense for vehicle owners that drive in areas with high amounts of rainfall. Because traditional cold air intakes relocate the air filter outside of the engine bay, often near the front grill or front wheel, the engine is more susceptible to ingesting water. An AEM short ram air intake usually places the Dryflow synthetic air filter in the same location as the factory air filter box. This is normally a spot high up under the hood of most cars or trucks and is well protected from the elements.

When considering the purchase of an aftermarket air intake system, use the Search by Car or Truck tool to find an AEM air intake system for your vehicle. Check to see if an AEM short ram air intake or AEM CAI is available, and use the information above to determine which style intake is best suited for your intended use and budget.

AEM Cold Air Intake Adds More Power and Better Acceleration to Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6

AEM performance cold air intake system for the 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6
The AEM performance cold air intake system for the 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6 increases performance and leaves all the stock emissions control equipment in place

As optional equipment, the 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma can be purchased with the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 engine rated at 236 horsepower. A 236 horsepower V6 isn’t anything to laugh at, but who wouldn’t want to bolt on a few more ponies? This is why AEM Intakes designed cold air intake system 22-681C for the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 second generation Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6. This Cold Air Intake System is precision-engineered to provide a noticeable increase in horsepower, better acceleration, and improved engine sound for the Toyota Tacoma.

AEM CAI 22-681C uses an AEM Dryflow air filter and gray powder coated air intake tubes
AEM CAI, number 22-681C, uses an AEM Dryflow air filter, and gray powder coated air intake tubes to draw from the factory cold air inlet in the 05-14 Toyota Tacoma wheel well

The AEM cold air intake system for 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma V6 models is a little different from the average cold air intake system. AEM Intakes designers chose to retain the use of the stock air filter box when designing the 22-681C cold air intake system. Retaining the stock air filter box allowed AEM Intakes designers to increase performance while keeping inlet air temperatures, and air / fuel ratios within factory specifications. Utilizing the stock air filter box maintains the use of the factory cold air inlet near the front wheel, allowed the CAI system to retain all factory air intake connections, as well as leaving all the stock emissions control equipment undisturbed.

Testing revealed that the factory air intake ducting was partially to blame for intake tract restriction in the stock system. Included in the 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6 cold air intake system is a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube which helps to reduce the restriction found in the stock air ducting, and allows the engine to breathe easier. Restriction isn’t the only trouble with the stock air intake as it also creates turbulence in the incoming air. The mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube used in this cold air intake has a smooth and consistent internal circumference for reduced turbulence. To ensure that the cold air intake tubes will look great for years to come, it is finished in a charcoal gray powder coat. A custom designed air accelerator is affixed to the end of the air intake tubes and is then inserted into the factory cold air intake source in the wheel well. This ensures that the 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6 will draw cool, fresh, and dense air from outside the engine compartment.

The second generation Toyota Tacoma is assembled in the United States
The second generation Toyota Tacoma is assembled in the United States first in Fremont, California and now at Toyota's Texas plant in San Antonio, Texas alongside the Toyota Tundra

AEM Dryflow air filters are designed to flow more air than typical paper automotive air filters, and because of this AEM synthetic air filter 28-20281 is able to reduce restriction inherent to using stock disposable automotive air filters. Advanced AEM Dryflow, non-woven, oil free, synthetic air filter media is at the heart of the replacement AEM air filter for 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6 models which allows for easy cleaning, durable service, and excellent filtration without the need for air filter oil.

All of the design features of the 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6 cold air intake system work together to deliver increased horsepower, torque, and improved acceleration. On the dyno, 22-681C produced an estimated 5 more horsepower at 5,100 rpm and 6 pound-feet of torque at 5,100 rpm over the stock system. Additional horsepower and torque can come in handy when merging onto a highway, towing, or trying to tackle an obstacle off-road.

An AEM performance cold air intake system is an excellent upgrade for 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 second generation Toyota Tacoma models with a 4.0L 1GR-FE V6. This is a complete cold air intake system including all the necessary hardware and step by step installation instructions. To provide peace of mind, AEM Induction Systems stands behind its products with a Lifetime Limited Warranty.
