Following a successful 2015 King of the Hammers (KOH) 4400 class 5th place finish AEM sponsored driver Derek West drove his AEM equipped Ultra4 car to win the Dirt Riot 4400 class race in Jacksonville, Alabama. Derek West entered the 2015 King of the Hammers with a brand new Jimmy’s 4x4 Ultra4 4400 car built from the chassis up in less than six weeks. Derek had a mere one hour of run time on the car heading into the big KOH race and had very little time to test or tune the car. The King of the Hammers is a race of attrition with mechanical failures being the number one cause of the dreaded “Did Not Finish” or DNF on the results board. Derek West and his co-pilot weren’t immune to their share of mechanical gremlins during their KOH race; however they pulled it together for a very respectable top five finish.

After the 2015 King of the Hammers, Derek’s team got the Jimmy’s 4x4 built Nitto Tire/NorthStar Battery car back in tip top shape. They decided some more testing was needed and what better way to run a car through its paces than by entering another race. Derek and his team decided to see what the car could do in some tight woods racing, and headed to Jacksonville, Alabama for the W.E.Rock Dirt Riot Southeast round one race at ChoccoLocco Mountain. Derek was worried that the new car’s extra width might limit his ability to negotiate a tight woods course at speed; however it proved to be a non-issue during the race. Derek was able to drive the new AEM filters equipped Jimmy’s 4x4 built Nitto Tire/NorthStar Battery car through the trees just as well as he had done in the past.

The winner of each class was determined by the most number of laps completed in the least amount of time. Derek and his co-driver, Wes Choate from Sho-Me Speed, completed seven laps of the Dirt Riot endurance race at Choccolocco mountain in just over 1 hour and 2 minutes. Derek and Wes were nearly four minutes ahead of Jason Shipman in the 4414 car. “I was really itching to get out and continue testing and tweaking on this new car. While we had a good finish at KOH we had enough issues before the race that we just didn't have the test time in that we wanted,” said Derek West.

"The Nitto Tire / NorthStar Battery car performed flawlessly today, I am ready to start turning up the horsepower now to get ready for the Ultra4 Stampede event", said Derek. Derek West and his team rely on AEM Dryflow synthetic air filters and pre-filter wraps to keep the Jimmy’s 4x4 built Nitto Tire/NorthStar Battery car running flawlessly. Derek West will kick off the Ultra4 racing 2015 Trail Gear Western Regional Series with the MetalCloak Stampede in Sacramento, California 5/8/15 – 5/9/15.

AEM Air Intake Gives 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L a Street Legal Horsepower Upgrade

2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L V8 models can experience an increase in horsepower and torque

2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L V8 models can experience an increase in horsepower and torque as well as more aggressive engine sound from an AEM Intake

The Ford Mustang has been synonymous with performance since its introduction in 1964 and since 1994 AEM Induction Systems has been synonymous with improving horsepower through innovation. In an effort to improve horsepower and meet the needs of AEM cold air intake fans nationwide, AEM offers two performance air intake systems for 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L V8 models. AEM Ford Mustang GT and Boss 302 5.0L V8 air intake, number 22-684C, differs from the alternate AEM cold air intake system available for 2011-2014 5.0 V8 models because AEM designers retained the use of the stock air filter box. Designing AEM cold air intake 22-684C around the stock air filter box allowed AEM Intake designers to retain all factory connections, including stock emissions control equipment, to create a 50-state street legal air intake system. Installation of the AEM 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L 50-state street legal air intake is incredibly easy compared to the alternate AEM cold air intake and only requires minimal tools with reduced installation times.

The AEM 50-state street legal air intake for 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L V8 models

The AEM 50-state street legal air intake for 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L V8 models includes a powder coated aluminum air intake tube and an AEM Dryflow air filter

The maze of accordion like intake tubing, and noise baffling installed at the factory adds a significant source of restriction to stock 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L and Boss 302 models. Included in the AEM 50-state legal air intake system for 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 Ford Mustang 5.0L V8 models is a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube. This new aluminum AEM air intake tube is designed to overcome the restriction found in the stock air ducting. Restriction isn’t the only trouble with the stock air intake as it also creates turbulence in the incoming air. The mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube used in 22-684C has a smooth and consistent internal surface for reduced airflow turbulence. Reducing restriction and straightening airflow allows the Fifth Gen Ford Mustang 5.0 V8 engine to work more efficiently. To complement the under hood appearance of the 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L V8 the intake tube is protected with a durable charcoal gray powder coat finish that will look great for years to come. An added benefit of the AEM mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube is that it will eliminate the stock intake noise baffling system. This will give 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L and Boss 302 V8 models a more aggressive engine sound.

In-house dyno testing shows that the AEM 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L V8 and Boss 302 50-state street legal air intake system produced a surprising estimated 9 horsepower and 11 lb-ft of torque maximum increase at the rear wheels of an otherwise stock 2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0. By simply reducing restriction, and improving airflow the AEM performance 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L V8 50-state street legal air intake system is able to improve horsepower and torque delivery across the RPM range. Making usable horsepower increases in common RPM ranges is a design goal at AEM as this yields a performance upgrade that can be used even during normal driving situations.

AEM Dryflow air filters are performance designed to reduce restriction over typical paper air filters. The AEM 2011-2014 Ford Mustang 5.0L V8 50-state street legal air intake system includes AEM Dryflow replacement air filter 28-20431. Using an AEM Dryflow replacement air filter helps to reduce the restriction inherent to stock disposable paper air filters. AEM Dryflow air filters are built with a robust synthetic air filter media designed to help increase airflow, and provide outstanding engine protection without the need for air filter oil. AEM Dryflow replacement air filters are washable and reusable and can go up to 50,000 miles between cleanings under normal highway driving conditions. When it’s time to clean the air filter, it can be easily completed using the AEM air filter cleaner 1-1000. Cleaning is performed by following a simple four step process. Because an AEM dry filter does not require oil, the air filter can be returned to service sooner and with less effort.
