It wasn’t long ago that turbochargers were only used in high-performance cars. The idea is that by forcing air into the combustion chamber performance is improved over a naturally aspirated engine because more air and proportionately more fuel can enter the engine than with atmospheric pressure alone. A turbocharger is one way in which a 4-cylinder car, like a Subaru WRX STi, is able to produce nearly as much horsepower as a V8 engine with a lot less weight. Recently auto manufacturers have been relying on turbocharger technology to improve fuel efficiency.
