An AEM Cold Air Intake Adds Horsepower to Your 2016 Honda HR-V 1.8L

An AEM 21-800C Cold Air Intake provides more power & superior engine protection

An AEM 21-800C cold air intake provides more power & superior engine protection

If you live in a world where space comes at a premium, then the 2016 Honda HR-V is an excellent choice. It's based on the subcompact Honda Fit, so the tiny dimensions make this little CUV shockingly easy to park, turn, and weave through traffic. Like the Fit, the Honda HR-V is teeming with novel ways to squeeze lots of stuff and/or people into its toddler-sized footprint. For example, the rear "Magic Seat" is situated to offer plenty of legroom, and the seatback can recline to accommodate even the lankiest of teenagers. The seat bottom can be folded up to create a separate cargo hold that can swallow items up to 4-feet tall. And the front passenger seat can even fold flat so you can haul stuff that's up to 8-feet long (Honda likes to reference the HR-V's tremendous kayak-toting capability in their brochures). To get all of your friends/stuff home from IKEA, they've given this versatile little crossover a peppy 1.8L EarthDreams 4-cyl that makes 141-hp / 127 lb-ft of torque. But since getting "more" is the mantra of the subcompact CUV segment, you should consider upgrading to an AEM 21-800C cold air intake system. This low restriction intake can add an estimated 5-hp and 7 lb-ft of torque, and the reusable AEM DryFlow air filter might help save you some money.

Like all gas engines, the Honda HR-V 1.8L has to inject fuel and air into the cylinders, then the computer tells the ignition system to trigger the appropriate spark plug to detonate the mixture. Since air serves as the catalyst, increasing the amount of oxygen molecules inside the cylinder will create a much hotter explosion, which consumes the gasoline more completely and forces the piston down with greater force. That piston then spins the crankshaft, and the resulting rotational energy can be used to turn the drive wheels. The force from the fuel detonation is where horsepower comes from, and the rotational energy from the crankshaft is where the wheel-turning torque figure originates. When you reduce the ambient temperature and flow restrictions that are placed on the air by Honda's stock intake system, the engine can extract more power from the same amount of fuel. And the AEM 21-800C cold air intake system is designed to do just that.

AEM DryFlow air filter removes up to 99% of contaminants from the air

AEM DryFlow air filter removes up to 99% of contaminants from the air

In order to get air into the motor, the Honda intake system draws it in through a small opening in the bottom of the air box, then forces it through a thick paper air filter to remove any airborne contaminants. Once cleaned, the dirt settles between the folds in the filter, and the air that does make it through this restricted walls of dirty paper, gets sent to the cylinders through a narrow plastic intake tube that is riddled with tight bends and uneven surfaces. As the air bumps its way down that intake tube, the turbulence causes it to heat up, reducing the number of oxygen molecules, and thus the amount of horsepower / torque that it can be used to create. An AEM 21-800C cold air intake system on the other hand, pulls in air through an oversized round DryFlow air filter that's designed to flow significantly more air than an OE Honda HR-V air filter. To better protect the engine, this filter is made from a special 3D structured synthetic material that can remove up to 99% of the airborne contaminants, then store them deep inside a web of synthetic fibers. This "depth loading" performance air filter won't need to be cleaned for up to 100,000 miles (depending on road conditions), and the dirt won't cause airflow restrictions as the miles tick away. Plus, this entire AEM cold air intake system is backed by the AEM Lifetime Limited Warranty, so you'll never have to buy another expensive OE Honda air filters again.

To access an unlimited supply of cold air, that big AEM DryFlow air filter is positioned behind the front grille, and the factory radiator shroud keeps warm engine air from entering the system. The clean air then travels to the engine through a wide diameter aluminum intake tube, which has integrated sensor fittings to preserve the factory ECU settings. To eliminate air turbulence, wide-angle bends are created in the tube using a mandrel bending machine, and the aluminum actually soaks up heat so the air temperature gets reduced even further. The high volume of power-rich oxygen provided by the AEM 21-800C cold air intake system not only increases the horsepower and torque, but it will come in at lower RPMs. As a result, your gas pedal will respond faster, and engine strain will be reduced when you're towing/hauling heavy loads.

With more power, more engine protection, and more ways to save money on engine maintenance, an AEM 21-800C cold air intake System is the perfect way to get "more" from your little Honda HR-V.

An AEM DryFlow Air Filter Can Help Your Toyota, Scion, or Lexus Breathe Easier

The AEM 28-20326 DryFlow replacement air filter will improve both horsepower & engine protection

The AEM 28-20326 DryFlow air filter will allow your Toyota, Scion, or Lexus breathe easier

Toyota didn't become one of the world's largest car companies by accident. They spend billions of dollars to develop vehicles that can appeal to a wide range of customers. Then they spend billions more to develop reliable engines that can be used in many different models. By using these shared powertrains, Toyota is able to control their manufacturing costs and keep their prices competitive. Smooth operation and effortless power delivery have become hallmarks of the Toyota brand, and engines like the 2005-2012 Toyota 3.5L V6, 2008-2015 Toyota 2.4L, and 2011-2016 2.5L, had to undergo rigorous testing to be sure they could deliver the kind of driving experience that buyers have come to expect. After meeting Toyota's stringent durability and performance targets, the 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 was used to power the 2007-2012 Lexus ES350, 2005-2012 Toyota Avalon, 2007-2011 Toyota Camry V6, and 2009-2015 Toyota Venza. The 2AR-FE 2.5L found a home in the stylish 2011-2016 Scion tC, and the sturdy 2AZ-FE 2.4L 4cyl was used in a number of popular models, including the 2009-2013 Toyota Corolla, 2009-2013 Toyota Matrix, 2009 Pontiac Vibe, 2010-2015 Toyota Rukus, and 2008-2015 Scion xB. These reliable engines played a key role in the success of these models, and they helped to strengthen Toyota's reputation for reliability and value. But if you'd like to unlock some hidden performance in these Japanese stalwarts, you're going to need an AEM 28-20326 DryFlow performance air filter.

Toyota engineers go to great lengths to develop engines that will stand the test of time. But no matter how advanced these motors are, they still need a steady supply of air to make power. It comes in through the air intake system, passes through an air filter to remove any impurities, then gets injected into the cylinders right before detonation. As the air enters each cylinder, its velocity causes the oxygen molecules to blend with the fuel. This potent air/fuel mixture is then ignited by the spark plug, and the resulting explosion consumes the oxygen as it forces the piston to turn the crankshaft and send power out to the wheels. However, the OE Toyota air filter can actually limit the amount of power these engines can make.

The front or top of the filter is red, while the back of the filter is white, showing that the airflow goes through the lofty red side, trapping contaminants

The front or top of the filter is red, while the back of the filter is white, showing that the airflow goes through the lofty red side, trapping contaminants

All Toyota replacement air filters are made from a thick paper that significantly restricts the velocity and volume of air that can pass through it. The dirt it removes collects on the surface of the filter, which slowly reduces airflow with each passing mile. This causes the engine to make less power, as it struggles to breathe through that dirt-caked air filter. An AEM 28-20326 DryFlow performance air filter on the other hand, is made from a special non-woven polyester with AEM's proprietary three dimensional internal structure. Unlike paper, this synthetic material allows considerably more air to pass through it. Two outer layers of coated aluminum wire screen are used to increase structural rigidity, and stop large dirt/debris from entering the intake system. The synthetic filter media then removes up to 99% of the dirt particles from the air, and stores them inside a web of synthetic fibers. This depth-loading design provides additional airflow. Thanks to its non-oiled synthetic material, cleaning an AEM DryFlow air filter is simple and hassle-free.

To take advantage of this replacement air filter, you won't have to make any underhood modifications, because the AEM 28-20326 DryFlow replacement air filter is a drop in replacement for your existing Toyota air filter.

The AEM 28-20326 air filter is designed to fit the following vehicles:

AEM Induction and Chris Forsberg Take Two Prestigious SEMA Awards

Forsberg Z in the AEM booth at the 2016 SEMA show

Forsberg's 280Z takes home two prestigious SEMA show awards

It’s been a wild year for both Chris Forsberg and AEM Induction. Taking home the 2016 Formula Drift Championship and now taking two awards at the SEMA Show. Gran Turismo awarded the 1975 Datsun 280Z of Forsberg’s Best Asian Import for the 2016 show and it would move on to win the Super Street Best of Show Award. Not bad for a car that was rebuilt just a few weeks before the SEMA Show.

Forsberg Z Gran Turismo in the AEM booth at the 2016 SEMA show

Chris Forsberg's Z was awarded "Best Asian Import" by Gran Turismo at SEMA

We’ve detailed the build of the 1975 280Z that Forsberg built for the 2016 SEMA Show, so it probably doesn’t need a detailed introduction. However, the finished product and reading about it prior to its debut really show why it won both of these awards. First up was the Gran Turismo Awards where it won Best Asian Import and what makes this award special is that Gran Turismo creator, Kazunori Yamauchi of Polyphony Digital, has input on the awards.

The gorgeous Z was also awarded the Super Street Best of Show Award (Image SuperStreetOnline.com)

Next up was the second annual Super Street Awards, in which three vehicles are chosen as finalists by Super Street and RJ de Vera of Meguiar’s, a very well-known and respected former writer of the magazine. This award is seen as the solution to the lack of Japanese and European car awards in the sea of domestic and truck ones. This year, the Best of Show award went to Forsberg and the Z, just detailing how amazing of a build it was.

In a sea of FR-S and BRZ builds, it was the classic lines of a Datsun that took home two honors at the SEMA Show. With three Formula Drift Championships and now two major SEMA awards under his belt, we’re pretty sure it’s safe to say that Chris Forsberg knows how to build a Nissan. Just wait and see what 2017 will bring.
