How to Increase Horsepower with Air Intakes from AEM Induction Systems
- Oct 22, 2015
AEM Induction Systems has been designing and selling cold air intake systems as an easy way to increase horsepower since 1994. AEM, was embedded in the import tuner market from the very beginning and its first cold air intake was offered for sale in 1994 as a Do-It-Yourself upgrade for the Honda CRX and proved to be the beginning of a whole new tradition. Increasing horsepower and torque on early fuel injected vehicles was easier than it is today. With the evolution of modern cars AEM has had to also evolve with creative CAI designs. Although times have changed, the same principles of how to increase horsepower apply.
The goal of an aftermarket air intake system, whether it’s an AEM short ram air intake or an AEM cold air intake, is to increase power by reducing air intake restriction and turbulence. An aftermarket air intake system typically uses a larger diameter air intake tube than what comes from the factory. Larger diameter air intake tubing with smooth inner walls is capable of delivering a greater volume of air with less turbulence. When larger diameter tubing is matched with a performance air filter, such as an AEM Dryflow filter, the end result is an increase in power, improved performance, and better engine sound.
Ideally AEM will design a cold air intake, CAI for short, to relocate the air filter outside of the engine compartment. The traditional cold air intake positions the air filter inside of a wheel well, behind a headlight, or in front of the radiator to provide cooler air, while still remaining relatively protected. Modern cars and trucks are becoming increasingly technical in an effort to squeeze power, fuel efficiency, and low emissions from every drop of gasoline or diesel fuel. This has required AEM engineers to continually stay at the forefront of AEM CAI development. While a traditional cold air intake isn’t suitable for every vehicle, AEM still believes that maintaining inlet air temperature (IAT) at or near ambient air temperature is a crucial way how to increase horsepower. This has led AEM Induction Systems to utilize alternative CAI designs such as enclosed air box designs, additional fresh air sources, or even a hood scoop in an effort how to increase horsepower, safely, and consistently. In testing air intake designs, it has been noticed that some vehicles will benefit more from an AEM short ram intake design. Engines designed for peak power near redline often benefit more from the installation of an AEM short ram air intake. AEM engineers design intake systems as a fully integrated component of the vehicle. Significant testing is performed to assure that an AEM air intake is an easy way how to increase horsepower safely, and consistently. AEM air intake owners can feel confident knowing that their AEM CAI or short ram intake system is designed to improve performance reliably and in a usable RPM range. AEM cold air intake systems are made in the U.S.A and backed with a lifetime limited warranty giving further assurance that AEM is confident in its products.
