There’s old sports adage that maintains championships are won and lost in the offseason. Motorsports perhaps confirms that claim more often than other competitive endeavors. With motorsports you can’t get away with merely pumping up the athlete, you also need to get his ride righteously yoked up. In the months leading up to the start of the 2013 Formula Drift Championship season, Chris Forsberg and his crew, Brian Wilkerson and Ray Shake, spent countless hours rebuilding and revamping the AEM sponsored 2012 NOS Energy Drink 370Z in preparation for the season. Upgrades to the suspension, weight reduction, steering angle and most importantly engine performance were made. The team’s Herculean offseason efforts were immediately reward with a 3rd place finish in the first round of the championship at Long Beach, California.

After the event a confident Forsberg declared "This is definitely the best car I have ever driven, once we make a few more upgrades to the engine package, we will be unstoppable."

The CFR team plans on completing the next round of upgrades before their car hits the track for Round 2, at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. We talked with Forsberg to get his take on the maddening mechanical anomaly that ended his Round 1 run.

In your semi-final run against Vaughn Gittin Jr. you mention a “small glitch” that cost you the race, can you address that?
“In the semi-finals when I faced Vaughn Gittin Jr, my engines computer lost sync with the crank trigger causing it to lose almost 200hp. It was an issue we were chasing all weekend and it reared its ugly head against Vaughn, who you cannot give any amount of advantage too. We were able to fix it before the consolation round and won 3rd Place!”

Tell us a bit about some of the changes you made to your car this year?
“We lightened up the car even more this offseason with several carbon fiber upgrades, aiming to place the weight in the right places for a more balanced car. We have also switched our car over to a Motec ECU system to help with the issue we were having in Long Beach.”
It’s safe to assume that Forsberg and Gittin’s paths will cross many more times during this year’s Formula Drift Championship chase.

Starting the season with a podium finish bodes well for the rest of the year, what are your expectations for the next round?
“A podium finish at the first round is an amazing way to start any race season. We are very excited to know that we have a very competitive team for the 2013 championship. Atlanta is one of my favorite tracks and we have had some of our greatest successes there. I look forward to taking this momentum from Round 1 with us!”

Anything else new with you or the team you’d care to talk about?
Another big addition to our team for 2013 is having Scott Davidson as my spotter and engineer. He is the most knowledgeable man I know when it comes to chassis tuning and he has shown to be a great improvement to the drivability of our car at Long Beach.”

Scott Davidson’s expertise comes from years of oval track racing, as well as his most recent experience as a Formula Drift Crew Chief. Davidson will serve as Chris' eye in the sky, closely examining every run and helping the team make changes to the car's set-up, based on the immediate track conditions and the next opponent Forsberg will be facing. As Forsberg chases a second Formula Drift Championship this year, he and the team will remain ever vigilant in their search for the even the slightest competitive advantage.
