2016 Acura ILX with AEM Cold Air Intake Unleashes Acura Potential

One of the first steps you can take to improve your engine's performance is to help the engine breathe easier. Doing so is not overly difficult, the addition of a cold air intake system that replaces the stock air filter setup will help bring fresher, cooler air into your engine. All it takes is a few tools, and a little bit of time. An example of one of these systems is the 21-784C from AEM.

Since the 21-784C was designed specifically for the 2016 Acura ILX, it has accommodations for the factory MAF sensor and PCV hose.

A cold air intake not only simplifies the route the air takes to reach the engine, it also increases the volume of air. Another benefit of the cold air intake, and the reason for its name is that it isolates the air filter from the engine, lowering the overall temperature of the air coming in.

The AEM 21-784C system replaces the stock air box and air tube with a new intake in the original location. A specialized heatshield keeps the oversized AEM Dryflow air filter isolated form the engine's heat. Cooler air is denser and that density means an increase in oxygen. It is the oxygen that mixes with the fuel and burns, causing combustion and all the fun stuff when you're accelerating.

The kit fits in the stock intake location and the fit and finish is top notch.

The synthetic, washable AEM Dryflow air filter is extremely durable. Under normal conditions, most of them do not need to be cleaned for 100,000 miles. The air intake itself is mandrel-bent aluminum that is designed to use the stock mass air flow sensor and PCV hose. The intake is powder coated in gunmetal gray, and the filter is red in color, making for a stylish and functional addition under the hood.

The Acura ILX is a sporty little sedan that features an 8-speed transmission utilizing Acura's Dual Clutch Technology (DCT) system. The DCT system was born in Honda's racing efforts and quickly found its way into all levels of automotive, as well as motorcycle and ATVs. It has proven to be a very efficient way to transfer power, allowing smaller engines to feel much bigger. In stock form the ILX is rated at 201 horsepower. The estimated horsepower gain from the AEM intake is an additional 15 horsepower. Of course, results vary, but image how that boost will feel behind the wheel?
