2014, 2015 and 2016 Mazda 6 AEM Cold Air Intake Delivers More Horsepower and Torque
- Jun 2, 2016
If you are a driver's driver, a family sedan is probably not your first vehicle of choice, but what if a 3,200-lb. four-door could accelerate 0-60 mph in as little as 7.5 seconds, brake in about 128 ft., and get nearly 25 mpg in town? The third-generation Mazda 6 can do this, and more, and engage even the most dutiful operator in a real driving experience. While aimed at those who occupy that wide middle of the road with the moms and dads who must conscientiously transport their most precious cargo: their children, the Mazda 6 is intended to be fun to drive. Derived from the Mazda 626 and earlier mid-size 6es, this upsized iteration retains a certain joie de vivre with precise handling, sporty (harder) suspension for a good road feel and notable throttle response that sets it apart from bread-and-butter transporters.
That the car also employs antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, a rearview camera, and optional rear parking sensors across all trims has been commended. Available in Touring and standard in Grand Touring trims are blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring and a frontal collision mitigation system using an infrared laser sensor to detect an imminent collision are real-time performance and safety advantages. Further on the safety front, in 2015 the Mazda 6 achieved a five-star rating in government crash tests and the highest rating of "good" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's strength tests. Power for all trims of U.S. cars is, as of 2015, a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that sends 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels with either a six-speed manual or automatic, with or without options, fulfills its mission admirably. Adding the i-ELOOP (available in Grand Touring trim) allows kinetic energy generated under braking to produce electricity that can later be used to power headlights, audio, and climate control systems, and increases engine efficiency. Here to increase efficiency that much more is the AEM 21-779C cold air intake system. By replacing the Mazda 6's stock restrictive filter and intake housing with the 21-779C, you maximize air flow through its powder-coated, mandrel-bent aluminum air intake tube and oversized Dryflow synthetic, washable, reusable air filter. The results, shown in dynamometer testing of a 2014 Mazda 6's stock 2.5L, 4-cylinder engine turning 2700 rpm, were an estimated 7-hp gain, and at 3200 rpm, a boost of an estimated 8 ft-lb of torque. Enough to make climbing freeway onramps a piece of cake. This system was developed to bolt into the 2014-2016 Mazda 6's stock air box space, accommodating the factory emissions control devices, including the mass airflow sensor and breather tube. No special tools are required and detailed instructions comes with it and can also be downloaded from the AEM website. A special heat shield is part of the installation that is designed to protect the filter, reduce intake air temperature and increase horsepower.
The cylindrical, cone-shaped AEM Dryflow air filter is made from an oil-free, synthetic filter media that can be used for up to 100,000 miles (depending on driving conditions) before it needs to be cleaned, but you can inspect and clean it more often if you wish. Its pleated design and unique synthetic medium allow more dust and particles to be collected before air enters the induction system, so while there may be a big buildup in the filter, it can be easily cleaned with AEM 1-1000 air filter cleaner spray, rinsed in running water, dried, and reinstalled. The 21-779C air intake is protected by AEM's lifetime limited warranty, to last for the life of your vehicle, except in cases of mechanical damage (i.e. improper installation or fitment), damage from misuse, accidents, or flying debris. When shopping for the 21-779C, use the AEM online product search or locate a dealer near you by using the AEM dealer search tool.
